The situation: A personal injury attorney approached BLE on behalf of a client who had developed autoimmune hepatitis at a young age after growing up in a small town with documented trichloroethylene (TCE) contamination. 

What we did: Our Science Adviser reviewed the client's exposure data, the peer-reviewed literature on TCE and autoimmunity, and her own research on TCE-induced autoimmune hepatitis. We produced a detailed causation report establishing the biological plausibility of the client's illness given their exposure profile. We also prepared counsel for deposition and provided rebuttal support when the defense's expert submitted a contrary opinion.

The outcome: The case resulted in a settlement of over $20 million for the plaintiff.

The situation: A mid-sized city was weighing a zoning decision on a proposed commercial facility expected to emit known environmental toxicants. City council members needed to understand the public health implications before voting.

What we did: BLE evaluated potential community exposure levels. We generated a human health risk profile for the chemicals of concern. Our Science Communications lead prepared accessible briefing materials for council members and a plain-language summary for community distribution. We also attended a public hearing to answer questions from both officials and residents.

The outcome: The city council had the scientific foundation to make an informed land-use decision. Community members reported feeling heard and accurately informed.

The situation: Legal teams representing veterans and family members exposed to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune needed credible expert causation reports to support claims under the Camp Lejeune Justice Act.

What we did: Our Science Adviser has expertise in the health effects of trichloroethylene (TCE), perchloroethylene (PCE), benzene, and vinyl chloride, all the predominant contaminants documented at Camp Lejeune. She prepared general causation reports for plaintiffs with a range of diagnoses, including various cancers, Parkinson's Disease, and other conditions with documented links to the contaminants present at the base.

The outcome: Reports were submitted in support of ongoing litigation under the Act.
